The Assistant Controller reports directly to the Corporate Controller and will oversee various financial operations of our self-clearing investment brokerage firm. You will be responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and the efficient management of financial resources. This role requires a deep understanding of financial management, investment brokerage operations, regulatory reporting, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accounting, Financial Reporting, and Analysis
    • Own & execute a timely and accurate month-end & year-end close process, ensuring completeness of records including reconciliation of balances and movements and working papers.
    • Prepare and present accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
    • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and potential areas for improvement.
    • Identify and resolve discrepancies proactively, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal policies.
    • Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards, IFRS, and regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensure adherence to all relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards, including those specific to self-clearing investment brokerage operations.
    • Prepare required regulatory reports and documentation including Form 1, MFRs and other regulatory filings in compliance with CIRO and FINRA requirements.
    • Preparation of capital adequacy monitoring reports and other regulatory compliance reports.
  • Financial Controls and Processes
    • Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
    • Streamline and optimize financial processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Team Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and mentor the Accounting Operations team, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional development.
    • Collaborate with other departments to support cross-functional initiatives and projects.
  • Audit and Tax Compliance:
    • Help coordinate and manage internal and external audits, including statutory and regulatory audits, ensuring timely and accurate completion.
    • Assist Corporate Controller, as needed, with aspects of tax compliance and planning.
  • Continuous Improvement and Ad-hoc Projects
    • Proactively identify and drive improvements to current financial systems, processes, reports and models by leveraging financial data, non-financial data, external benchmarks, automation and prior industry experiences.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration & Support
    • Effectively support and back up the Corporate Controller role as required. This may include financial reporting to stakeholders and internal management & executive reporting. Actively participate in and / or lead cross-functional initiatives including (but not limited to): system implementations, process improvements, training, and thought leadership.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 5+ years overall experience with 3+ years in a supervisory or managerial role, preferably within a financial services-based organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA designation (or equivalent) required.
  • Proven expertise in leading and executing the month-end process in a medium to large, complex organization.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian accounting standards, IFRS, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in financial software and systems (e.g., ERP systems, accounting software).
  • Possess executive-level communication abilities, including reporting, presentations, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to confidently make decisions and recommendations in areas under your supervision. Knowing how and when to delegate is essential.
  • A passion for solving challenging and impactful problems; getting into the weeds by understanding the how and why of business processes.
  • A proven track record and enthusiasm for building, managing, mentoring, and inspiring teams and influencing peer organizations; ability to lead cross-functional initiatives.
  • A curious nature: if something seems off, take immediate action to figure out what’s going on.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work in collaboration with various team members; confidence to express views.
  • Effective writing and presentation skills; ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple and easy-to-understand way for both financial and non-financial audiences at the highest levels in the organization.
  • Confidence to embrace new ways of doing things, including automating functions, finding scalable solutions, and driving continuous improvement.
  • Familiarity with self-clearing investment brokerage firms operating in Canada is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to regulations and regulatory organizations in Canada (CIRO) and US (FINRA) is an asset.
