Position Description (Senior Accountant)
Ventum Financial Corp. (“Ventum”) is a leading independent, Canadian-owned and nationally operated private client and capital markets firm, known for its client-centric approach and entrepreneurial spirit. Ventum’s head office is located in Toronto, and administration and operations are located in Vancouver.
The Senior Accountant reports directly to the Assistant Controller wand has a dotted line reporting relationship to the Director, Group Finance and will oversee various financial operations of our self-clearing investment brokerage firm and it’s parent company and other subsidiaries. You will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting regulatory compliance, financial reporting, audit, tax, and contributing to the overall efficiency of the accounting department. Through this role, you will develop and exercise core accounting and financial reporting skills, understanding of the financial services industry, investment brokerage operations, regulatory reporting, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
In this role, you will be responsible for
- Accounting & Month-end / Year-end Close
- Execute key accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records.
- Prepare journal entries, including complex accruals and intercompany transactions.
- Maintain and reconcile key balance sheet accounts, such as accrued liabilities, receivables, deferred revenue, prepaids, fixed assets, right-of-use, and intercompany balances.
- Perform month-end and year-end close activities, ensuring timely completion of reconciliations and working papers.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies proactively, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal policies.
- Financial & Regulatory Reporting
- Prepare and analyze financial statements and management reports, providing insights on variances and trends.
- Preparation of Form 1 and other regulatory filings in compliance with CIRO and FINRA requirements.
- Preparation of capital adequacy monitoring reports and other regulatory compliance reports.
- Preparation of debt covenant compliance reports.
- Assist with interim and external audit preparation, including drafting working papers and responding to auditor requests.
- Maintain and improve internal controls and financial reporting processes.
- Capital Markets Group & Private Client Services
- Support Capital Markets Group (CMG) & Private Client Services (PCS) with accounting, reporting and information requests, as needed
- Maintain and reconcile CMG receivables, deferred revenue, and retainer accounts and schedules; assist CMG with deal accounting
- Assist in the preparation of the quarterly CMG bonus pool calculation and supporting documents
- Assist with the allocation of costs and recoveries to PCS investment advisors
- Maintain and reconcile PCS commission payable accounts, including insurance and segregated funds
- Corporate and Indirect Tax Responsibilities
- Provide support for tax compliance, including Corporate and GST/HST filing and reporting.
- Maintain tax working papers as support for filings
- Collaborate with external service providers to ensure timely and complete tax filings
- Process Improvement & Compliance
- Identify and implement process efficiencies and automation opportunities to improve financial reporting and month-end close timelines.
- Ensure compliance with IFRS and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Support system upgrades and enhancements, working with IT and other stakeholders as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments to improve data integrity and streamline workflows.
- Support Functions
- Assist with financial and regulatory reporting inquiries from senior management.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate recording of operational data.
- Contribute to ad-hoc projects such as process improvements and system upgrades.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Perform administrative tasks to support the accounting team.
- Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding financial matters.
The Senior Accountant will have the following profile and qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA designation is required.
- Minimum 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within financial services, capital markets, brokerage. Public practice experience considered an asset.
- Strong working knowledge of IFRS Accounting Standards. Exposure to regulatory reporting requirements is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of financial software and systems (e.g., ERP systems, accounting software).
- A curious nature: if something seems off, take immediate action to figure out what’s going on.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work in collaboration with various team members; professionalism in communication and interactions with team members and external parties is required.
- Familiarity with self-clearing investment brokerage firms operating in Canada is an asset.
- Exposure to regulations and regulatory organizations in Canada (CIRO) and US (FINRA) is an asset.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, complex formulas, and data analysis tools.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent work ethic, and positive professional attitude.
